Ott was born in Albert Lea, Minnesota in 1947. he attended Mankato State College in Mankato, Minnesota, from 1965 to 1971, and then studied art at the University of Minnesota. He received Minnesota State Arts Board grants in 1978 and 1980. he also spent two years as artist-in-residence at St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Ott has exhibited in more than one hundred shows, including many devoted to realist art. He lives in Duluth, Minnesota.
