Turned wooden bowls are wonderful arenas for creativity, and for celebrating the natural beauty of wood. The artist, Michelle Holzapfel, is a Carleton parent. Her work bursts out of the category of turned wooden bowls—she's clearly more of a sculptor than a functional artist. This extraordinary bowl is an example of how the artist transforms a piece of wood into a metaphor for the organic process.

- American - Refers to the context of or associated specifically with the modern political entity of the United States of America.
- carving (processes) - The act of shaping, marking, or decorating wood, stone, or another material by cutting or incising, typically using tools such as chisels and other blades. It refers to this process as it is applied to small-scale objects or to objects that are not considered art. "Carving" may also be considered a sculpture technique that is employed in the creation of art.
- cherry - Wood of the tree of several species native to Europe and the United States. It varies in color from light to dark reddish with a beautiful luster and is prized for making furniture.
- Contemporary - Refers to painting, sculpture, graphic arts, and architecture dating from the recent past and present. It differs from modern art in that the term 'contemporary art' does not carry the implication of a non-traditional style, but instead refers only to the time period in which the work was created.
