Jean-Francois Millet, a major figure in French Realism, is better known for his paintings than his etchings. Preferring the country to rapidly industrializing Paris, he was a founding member of the Barbizon school. Millet published a number of etchings, including this one, in the Gazette de Beaux-Arts - a widely circulated art magazine first published in 1953.

- chine collee - A strengthening technique used in printing whereby a thin sheet of paper, originally China paper, is adhered to a heavier backing sheet and printed at the same time.
- drypoint (printing process) - Intaglio process in which a sharp needle scratches the plate creating a burr that yields a characteristically soft and velvety line in the final print.
- drypoints (prints) - Prints made using the drypoint process.
- etching (printing process) - Intaglio process in which the design is worked into an acid-resistant substance coating the metal printing plate; the plate is then exposed to acid, which etches the plate where the metal is exposed, to create lines and dark areas. - etchings (prints) - Prints made from an etched printing plate, which is a metal plate on which a design is made by coating the plate with an acid-resistant substance, creating a design in the coating, and then exposing the plate to acid, which etches the plate where the metal is exposed. For designs incised directly into a copper plate using a burin or graver, use "engravings (prints)."
