The Homage to the Square series, exploring color relationships, preoccupied Joseph Albers from 1949 until his death. This German born American artist and educator experimented with layered squares in shifting depth through both painting and printmaking. The screenprint, published to commemorate New York’s Metropolitan Museum, was presented to Cynthia Colwell as a farewell gift from colleagues at the Museum of Modern Art. Colwell donated MMA-1 to Carleton in honor of her 50th Reunion.
